South Downs and The Browning Version - Sound Designer
South Downs ... Minimal scenic props, sound and light worked in Harmony to set the scenes in this play. I selected music before the show started to set the scene for the audience. live recordings were made in a school and quiet bird song were used to create the sound scape and an old school handbell was sourced, recorded and used live by an actor at one point to great effect drawing the audience closer to the action. This play included some excellent unaccompanied singing in chorus by the cast, amplified by stage microphones for effect.
There was more reliance on scenic props than sound or light to set the scene during the second play, The Browning Version. I used a ticking clock in both plays to show the passing of time and as an audible link between the 2 plays drawing them closer together.
The play also gave me the opportunity to research and obtain some new equipment, which enabled a small wifi operated speaker to be fitted into a phone on a desk, the phone could be rung on queue triggered through Q Lab at the sound desk.
I ensure when designing that sound comes from the correct stage position which I believe adds to the reality of the scene.
In a previous play I had fitted a similar device inside a gramophone, but it was necessary to find a smaller version for this show.
As the Sound Designer for the production I was very pleased to hear the audience enjoyed the show.
‘You have excelled – and I mean at 100% level! Your phrases of “total quality experience” and “exceeds our customers’ expectations” are wholly achieved. The personal abilities on stage, and the competence levels of everyone else working unseen, were of the highest order. This is possibly the best theatrical experience I have ever had. No weaknesses whatsoever were evident – and how unusual is that?! Congratulations to everyone.’ –feedback from audience member.
